Q. Obviously being non-free it's not in the repos but I use it anyway because I have no use for Firefox 3.5 rebranded, I did some thingamabob to install Firefox 5 but it's update time and I have to do it manually.
If I'm going to whine about this should I just do the unthinkable and downgrade to Mint? (No way in hell I'm using straight-up Ubuntu though.)

A. This script is intended for Ubuntu but I have used it on Linux Mint Debian Edition
Download Firefox 6 tar.bz2 and save it to the Downloads directory
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/
Open a Terminal and submit the following commands
cd ~/Downloads/
tar xjf firefox-6.0.tar.bz2
sudo rm -r /opt/firefox
sudo mv firefox /opt/firefox
sudo mv /usr/bin/firefox /usr/bin/firefox-old
sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox
Exit the Terminal and Firefox 6 is installed

What Linux mint desktop is better? Cinnamon, or Mate?
Q. I like The Linux Mint Debian Edition better then the main edition. but i can't decide which Desktop environment i want to use. KDE is out. if i am going to use KDE then i'm going to use OpenSuse. They just do KDE better in my opinion. but that's all subjective of course. Xfce i don't like. that leaves Mate and Cinnamon. i like Cinnamon for its cleanliness and small footprint and Modern look. but i like Mate because i can still Run Compiz and its more customizable to an extent. but without making major changes to the Default UI theme it still isn't very modern looking at all. but i know. that's the whole point of mate to a certain extent. i am a big fan of Compiz. but then again Muffin ( the compositor for Cinnamon ) is alot more stable. but not as many bells and whistles. it's hard to choose. :( what do you think? should i just Flip a coin? :)
A. I'd go with Cinnamon, especially now that Update Pack 6 has brought Cinnamon up to version 1.6, on par with the main edition. You get the stability and reduced resource usage of the Debian base while using almost up-to-date packages.
For me, the only reason to use MATE over Cinnamon is being wedded to Compiz, and not having Compiz isn't a deal-breaker for me, I've moved on.

must not be based on ubuntu
must have gnome3/gnome-shell as default

A. Best Gnome 3 distro that isn't Fedora and isn't Ubuntu-based?
Linux Mint Debian Edition follows Debian Testing, which includes Gnome-Shell, though not by default (yet). It's an excellent distribution, but since it is rolling release it does require a bit more hands on work and experience.
openSUSE's implementation of Gnome 3 is good too.
