What is the best way to learn Linux operating system?

Q. I have always used Microsoft and desire to learn Linux. I am a programmer by occupation, but everything is done via Windows.
Also, which is the best Linux Distribution?

A. Ubuntu is a great way to go. It is free, and they will even send you free CD's if you can't download it for some reason (if you are asking a question here, I assume you are already online). For me, the best part of Ubuntu is the community. There is a great community of people from around the world, that are very polite and always happy to help answer any questions that you may have: http://www.ubuntuforums.org

Even though Ubuntu is currently on version 5.1 (Breezy Badger), http://ubuntuguide.org which was written for version 5.04 (Warty Warthog), is still a great guide that is very helpful as well.

The Synaptic Package Manager makes it VERY easy to install additional programs, and most of them are free.

There is a live CD (which runs from the CD, but is slower), if you would like to try it without having to install it to your hard drive first:

Give it a try, I am sure that you will like it. I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot about 7 months ago, and I finally removed Windows about 4 months ago. I am here to stay.

A. If you want native solution, then Cygwin is the best. It allows you to configure and install only those applications that you want.

Can I get a job if I learn linux for 6 months?
Q. I am planning to learn Linux for 6 months ( about 3H per day). Will I be ab;le to find a job as entry level easly or not? If not what should I learn to make it happen ? Thx.

A. You should be able to if they are hiring. Kind of toiugh in the job market now but things should get better in a couple months.

What are the requirements to use Linux From Scratch?

Q. Do I need a linux os to run it?
Is there any third party software I need?
Is LFS a programming language?

What can I do to get the code if I were to base it off of Ubuntu?

A. To get started, all you need is a lot of free time. Go to linuxfromscratch.org and start reading the book and follow the instructions. The prerequisites are listed in there. It will also point to the downloads you need. LFS is not a programming language, it is just the book which lists how to install Linux entirely from sources.

Is there a way to hook up an old hard drive to my laptop?
Q. I'm going to start on a Linux from Scratch and I need to hook up an old 40 GB HDD that was in an old computer that I had a long time ago. I was wondering if there was anyway that I could hook it up through USB to my laptop. There's a whole lot of writing on the disk, so if you need any of it to figure it out, then I will add extended details.

A. Get a USB adapter or a HD caddy.

Where to start for becoming a linux master?
Q. I have ubuntu 8.10 installed on my macbook and I am familiar with the gui as well as other desktop environments. But, I have no clue how to program, what a source code is, or how to build my own linux distro from scratch. I do know how to install several operating systems, how to partition a hard drive, and how to install hardware. I'd like to be a programmer someday and I want to know where to start. Thanks!

It guides you through building a distro from scratch.

Source code is basically the "recipe" to a program. A compiler converts source code to binary.

KDE wasn't my preferred desktop environment at first either, but as I started using it and discovered how much more configurable it is and found some of it's unique features (that the other DE's don't have), it became my favorite desktop environment.

But if you want to learn more about Linux, try using a distro that doesn't try to emulate Windows. Using slackware has taught me a lot.

What linux version is compatible with Broadcom wireless 802.11g card?

Q. I'm looking a linux version compatible with my wireless card but I dont seem to find any. I have SUSE 10.1 and it is not compatible, I think Fedora, Debian and others Ive looked are not either.

A. Download and install the Ubuntu Linux, you will install any applications easly and quickly. Just (once installed) open the Synaptics (package manager), search by " opera ", mark it to install and wait the installation finish.

You can to do this with any applications.

At school, how can you send a message to another linux computer using the linux version of command prompt?
Q. I have been trying to figure out how to send a message to another linux computer at school for a while now by using the linux version of command prompt. I have tried using the write command but it says I have write abilities disabled. I have also tried using smbclient -M accountnamehere and it always says failiure to connect to whatever account I tried to connect to. Any help would be awesome.

A. Maybe you as a normal user just don't have the rights to do so. It's probably so for security reasons.

How do you clear a pendrive COMPLETELY of viruses?

Q. Whatever I do , how much ever I format my 8 GB transcend pendrive, when I plug it in my PC, it says malware/spyware/ some unwanted thing detected.
How to get rid of viruses for good?

Also is it possible for electronic media like DVD players, guitar processors, musical keyboards to get VIRUS INFECTED if they are connected to infected computers?

A. Don't format ur pendrive with windows format. Instead use "HP USB Disk Format tool". Else delete unnecessary files on linux. MUST- use a FIREWALL(Windows Firewall is a Trash anyway) and a good antivirus.

How do you boot linux from a flash drive?
Q. I am looking for the best linux os distro that could boot straight from my flash drive.

Something like knoppix but for flash.

Another question, with that, can you access the hard drive and store information? Like to fix a windows machine?

A. You can run this of CD, USB, and even in RAM

To intall to USB drive:
First, boot up your computer from the DSL livecd, frugal, or USB-frugal. Note that it is not possible to do a USB install, or any other kind of install from a DSL Embedded system.

In the Fluxbox menu, go Apps >> Tools >> Install to USB Pendrive and choose either USB-ZIP emulation or USB-HDD emulation, depending on what is supported by your computer's bios.

Found an 8GB Flash drive, what should I do now?
Q. I already know about Portable apps and everything and I have me own laptop and desktop computers
is there anything else fun besides putting linux on it? I'd like some more info on pendrive linux as well.
it's a mini PNY usb flash drive and it's really cool how tiny it is but I have no use for it besides general storage...thanks!

A. How about if you treat your USB as a memory, let say Readyboost!!! 8GB more additional ram for your PC.

What is the best and easiest-to-manage Linux OS / POP / SMTP server for a novice Linux administrator?

Q. I am a novice Linux server admin (I can us SSH, vi, cron, and understand config files), but I am willing to learn. However, I do not have hundreds of hours to research and learn all the ins-and-outs of Linux. I need something fairly turnkey:

What is the best server software that will do all or most of the following:
- POP3 server
- SMTP server
- Webmail server (with good standard features, like WYSIWYG editor, attachments, etc.)
- Web-based end-user configuration tools
- Anti-virus
- Anti-spam (blacklists and whitelists & RBL support required, spam filtering logic a plus)
- Authentication data stored in a database for easy management.
- POP-before-SMTP authentication

Similarly, I need to pick the best Linux OS to run this puppy on. I would like an OS with a wizard install, and one with adequate security for a publicly accessible server.

Last of all, it would be great if all of the above would be freely available for commercial use.

A. There is a fantastic tutorial on qmail at the links below. qmail is very secure and is widely used. Many developers have ported it to the application extensions you want to use, like WebMail, anti-virus and anti-spam.

This should at least get you started.

What is the budget version of the windows home server?
Q. same function but cheaper

A. According to Google the price ranges from $140-$180. The low price listed was from newegg.com I am talking about the software only here. If you don't have a PC to run it on your going to have to pay for that too.

A cheaper version of the same functionality would be a Linux distribution. There are some companies that offer a free implementation that does the many of the same things offered by the windows home server. But I suspect the windows home server offers wizards and other turnkey functionality that is often missing in a Linux solution.

After looking at the information provided I think you would still have to buy a URL and static IP address or else rent space on a dynamic URL dns as well as have permission to be using your access to run an internet server.

One of the Linux links claims that windows home server is nothing but a print and files sharing server. I believe that is wrong because when I read the fine print it refers to things that I interpreted to mean a web server was being made available on the internet.

Considering how expensive most Windows Servers are, this is a very low price (most Windows servers start at $500+)

Backup to a home network via Internet?
Q. Which NAS allows me to backup my laptop to my home hard drive via the internet?
For example, I travel to Europe and want to backup to my NAS which is at home in Asia. Is it possible to backup this way? If so which company is recommended?

A. Well it isn't so much a specific NAS tool as it is the ability for your ISP to allow incoming traffic of this kind. You might want to use something like FreeNAS or TurnKey Linux and then set up a VPN on your home network. When you are away, simply access your VPN and you will have access to your NAS just as if you never left your home network, plus VPN typically adds some privacy too.

Am I risking lossing my operating system by booting my laptop with a linux live cd?

Q. I have windows 7 on my laptop and it wont really start up, so im going to recover my data from it by using a linux live cd to boot it up. Is there any risk that ill lose my windows 7 in the process?

A. No. Booting Linux from a CD won't harm your windows (unless you deliberately format your hard drive and install Linux from the CD). It's a good way to recover your data, but you'll still have to fix or re-install Windows.

Can you use PHP and Mysql with a Linux Live CD?
Q. If you come back to Windows will all your PHP & Mysql settings gone? Do you have to reinstall everything again if you decide to use a second time the Linux Live CD?? I don't want to install Linux permanently o0n my sustem but I would like to work with the Lice CD without losing my work & setings. Is it possible?

A. Linux LiveCD's are run within the RAM of your PC so you cannot save you settings between LIVE sessions.

Is it safe to watch porn using a Puppy Linux live cd?
Q. For example: boot from the live cd, surf some porn, then shut down the computer and not save the session.

The Puppy Linux live cd already has flash and everything else setup.
I'm talking about normal porn, nothing illegal.

And by safe, I was referring to my computer possibly being infected by viruses and malware.

A. I would image so. First off Linux would not be susceptible to most of the infections that those websites will give you, secondly the session would not be saved, meaning that if you do get something it will be erased when you shut down the system.

How do I get windows version of aim to work on Linux wine?

Q. I downloaded the windows version of AIM on Linux through wine, but I can't get it to open up. Any ideas on how to get it to work?

Could i use linux for light gaming on old computers?
Q. I like to browse the net and also play such games as DDO and LOTRO. I have really old crappy computers, so i think a lighter os would help. They use mainly XP, but some vista, and maybe a 7, but all windows. Some of them can run the games, and there are ways of playing them on linux (wine), so i see no problem with switching, and i am at least mildly compitent with computers. Any thought to convince/deter me, or any ideas on a specific os (ubuntu, mint...)

A. Yes, but it won't improve performance. Unless the game uses and openGL renderer, expect 1/3-1/2 FPS's under WINE.

There is out there a thing called Tiny XP which is XP minus everything you don't need for most games. Illegal if you just download the .iso and install it, but legal if you use your CD, rip it, modify it with special tools, burn it, and install with your own windows key. Something like that or just a fresh install would give you performance as good as your going to get for windows games.

How to install msn instant messenger onto ubuntu?
Q. I just recently got ubuntu and i am having problems installing and downloading files, Does anyone have any clue how to download MSN messenger on ubuntu? When i try the regular way it says i dont have the right stuff to do it, i have hear about doing it using linux wine. but i dont know how to do that, helP!!!!

A. Hey there!

The problem is, Windows Live Messenger doesn't work proporly in Wine yet, So you have two options.

1) Use Pidgin, It's MSN and it comes with Ubuntu! To get to it go to Applications, Internet, Pidgin Instant Messenger and follow the instructions

2) You can get aMSN, It's more MSN Like and supports Webcam. You can install it by Clicking Applications, Accessories, Terminal and copying and pasting the following in:

gksu apt-get install amsn

Then pressing enter. When you are back at the command line (After all the text has finished flashing up), Close your terminal and go to Applications, Internet, aMSN.
